Re: Southeast Open
With the new Red-shirt rules in place, a freshman cannot compete in the first semester Unattached to his program. They are allowed up to five competitions before their red-shirt is pulled. I would expect to see these same freshmen competing again next weekend as well, and they will have to be attached to the program, but it doesn't mean they will not ultimately red-shirt for the season.
As far as how it is determined what upper classmen are going to red-shirt or not, I am sure that is just a decision made by the coaching staff. Keep in mind as well that the team has to pay for travel, lodging, meals, and entry fees into the tournament for everyone wrestle for the University. Those wrestling unattached have to pay their own way. With the new rule change, comes bigger financial changes in the way teams set their rosters for open tournaments in the first semester.
Good luck to the team and Let's Go Mountaineers!!!

Anthony looked good, he beat a guy that was ranked in the top 30 and also beat a guy that had beaten a top 10 ranked guy. Things are definitely looking up for Mr. Carman, let's hope he can keep it going.
Other notables from the tournament include Sam Hillegas beat a top 20 ranked guy and finished second. Caleb Dowling is back in the line-up looking strong and healthy and had a second place finish. Cooley and Wolfgram both looked good with second place finishes. Michael Dolan picked things back up from last year and had a very impressive day going 5-0 along with freshman Brody Conley. And with second place finishes and going 4-1 Brayden Ivy and Brian Finnerty both looked good in their first college tournament.
Let's hope everyone gets healed up and keeps it going the next few weeks.
Re: Southeast Open
What a crazy weekend in Roanoke! In total, we had 26 wrestlers competing so there almost always someone up. We caught a little bit of the injury bug, but we're already working hard on getting healthy and we're optimistic about them all.
Despite the injuries, we had 3 champions, put 9 wrestlers in the finals, and had 15 total place winners. Not bad for a rough start.
Below are the complete results from everyone who competed. Of note, like most open tournaments, the losers of the semifinals drop into the third place bout, and wrestlers who lose before the semifinals can only wrestle back for fifth place.

Blumer went back down to 165? He looked huge the other day vs Conley in the wrestle offs at 174. Just looked like the much bigger guy
Re: Southeast Open
Not really very important for me to know or for anyone else for that matter, but 3 questions on how these open tournaments work. I get it now that one loss gets you only as far as the 5th/6th place match.
1) If Jace Schaeffer apparently lost his second match in the 5th/6th place match, how did he finish in 5th?
2) Is there a Dylan Kohn at 174, or was that a typo?
3) These results show Daum losing 3 matches with a 1-2 record. He must have one one of these matches.
Again, not being critical, just trying to learn.

Jace Schaeffer did indeed finish in 6th place.
Dylan Kohn was not affiliated with any team in the bracket. Not sure why he was listed as an independent wrestler and not as a WVU/unattached wrestler.
Daum did go 1-2, he won the second match against the guy from Newberry.
