Last second weight changes?

Postby crochog14 » Thu Feb 16, 2017 2:16 pm

Have heard of a big name or two moving weight class(es) last second in AA/A .... curious how many will actually move down or up... will it pay off?

I could see a good move from 182 to 195.

Whoever it is, they better make sure they follow WVSSAC rules about changing weights. They have to of wrestled 50% of their matches after their alpha date at that lower weight. They can not wait until regionals to switch weights unless their alpha date was after Feb 6th. http://www.wvmat.com/misc/alphadate.pdf

Another indicator of how well the rankings serve the WV community. The rankings serve as:

1. Who is in what weight class.

2. Who is doing well in each weight class.

When wrestlers see another wrestler go up or down, they either breath a sigh of relief or have an "Oh Sxxx" moment" and start scurrying to another weight class. This scurrying then disrupts the team late in the season. To each their own on how they run their teams.

Just imagine if there were no rules regarding weight changes. We would have kids doing some really crazy stuff.

They don't have to wrestle 50% of there matches, they have to weigh in at their desired weight 50% of their weigh ins.

I will add that a good rule of thumb is a wrestler should not try to stay at the same weight class 3 or 4 seasons. If they do, they are setting themselves up for failure.

Of course 220 and 285 are exceptions to the rule.

That was what meant. Sorry. My typing and my brain are not always on the same page. Correct, they have to weigh in.

When he said A two weight class move, that doesn't necessarily mean they went down to weight classes. We saw someone go up from 182 to 220 at the Kanawha County Championship and From what I understand the 50% rule does not apply to moves up

That 182 that wrestled 220 is now wrestling 285 and seeded 1 in his region

You are correct. It only counts for moving down. Usually wrestlers are dropping down, not going up, but it certainly happens.

So we have a 182 pounder that is now going up to 285? What is the minimum weigh in amount?

Bearhugger,

197.1 tomorrow and 198.1 on Saturday. Can only bump 1 weight class so he has to be over the 195 max weight.

I believe the language in the rule states "50% of weigh-ins at MINIMUM weight after alpha date", not "the lower weight." If a kid has been wrestling 2 classes or more above his minimum weight, sounds to me like he could drop a class at any time and make base without having been at that weight as long as it's still not his minimum eligible weight. Everyone always says it's when you go down in weight class, but that's not exactly what the rule says. What's the interpretation in this case?

So let me get this straight you have a 182 giving up possibly a 100 lbs. Is there no clear path to the championships at 182-195-220 this is crazy. I hope he doesn't get hurt when one of them big boys sprawls on him. Good luck to all today and tomorrow.

I guess that would apply if their minimum weight was at least 2 weight classes below where they have been wrestling.

I could be wrong here (wouldn't be the first time), if his minimum weight was below the next weight class down, but above the second weight class down, then I would think he needs to make weight at that first lower class 50% of the weigh-ins. So, for example, if he has been wrestling 160 and his alpha weight is 146, then he can't make base at 145, so his lowest weight would be 152 and he would have to weigh in 50% of his matches at 152.

285 lb. Division - Minimum weight is 197.1 and maximum weight is 287, so it could definitely be a 89.9 lb. difference!

I'm not one to juggle my line-up around, so I don't really care one way or the other, but I've noticed that I do sometimes have wrestlers that are two classes higher than their minimum weight on their alpha sheet. Sometimes they may think they're at their best weight at 138, for example, when their minimum weight says 126. The rule always seems to refer to when going to minimum weight, etc. So, my question is,.. is it permissable for the wrestler in the above example to drop to 132.0 at the last minute 1 weigh-in prior to regional (or maybe even day of regional) and not be subject to the 50%? I think this is allowed by the rules, and If this is the case, I don't know if many coaches realize it. Maybe there's already further explanation out their that goes on to say that any drop in class is subject to the 50% rule, but I'm not aware of it. I'm not a rules interpreter. Like I said, doesn't really affect me, but someone out their might like to know.

After you reach your lower class...from that point forward you have to wrestle 50% of your matches at the lower class. So you could drop at regional weigh ins and be within the rules.
That's how it was explained to me.
