WVU Lineup Early Look

Postby Jon Perkins » Tue Oct 01, 2024 9:37 am

With the new roster posted lets discuss some possible ways the lineup could look. Most of the weight classes are set but a few have some question marks. Lets discuss:
125: Jett should be the guy, but he obviously had some weight issues last year. Do we see him in this spot all year, does he move up to 133, or do we see him do the heavy lifting while someone like Mason Mills or Jace Schafer handles the light work throughout the year.
133: They got Tommy Maddox from the transfer portal but he is certainly no world beater, hopefully he will be an improvement. Of all the True Freshmen listed at 133 I would say Mason Kernan probably has the most talent, so do we see him step up and take the spot like Ty Watters did last year.
141: Jordan Titus is the man here. Hopefully with a little more improvement and some luck on him staying healthy he can make a good run at a podium finish.
149: Ty Watters is ranked in the top 5 and will be in the All-Star Classic, with some luck he can stay healthy and challenge for a National Championship.
157: Caleb Dowling is in his final year and has showed some promise in the past, lets hope he can put a good season together.
165: Peyton Hall will be going for his third All-American finish.
174: Brody Conley will be here. With some minor improvement and tightening a few things up in the off season he can be a serious podium contender.
184: Dennis Robin is the old wily veteran here. Can he fend off the True Freshman Hoke Hogan for the spot?
197: Austin Cooley has held this spot for the last few years, but I see Rune Lawrence saying, "This is my spot now."
HWT: Michael Wolfgram has one last shot to show us what he is made of, and from the lineup this weight class is looking awful skinny in depth.

Typically, WVU does not have an inter squad dual as a part of their wrestle offs. They do a bracketed mini tournament for each weight class. I prefer this style because it gives you a chance to watch most everyone wrestle at least 2 times. They usually do not post the brackets or match ups beforehand, but they do have this information available for those attending and Kyle always does a good job of posting the results. This year they are having their wrestle offs on Saturday, Oct. 26th at 6:30 p.m. In the years past they have always been in Shell Building located on the north side of the basketball arena.

I knew Rhodes didn’t do well last season but didn’t realize he went 1-11, according to wrestlestat. It shows him as unattached, which just means he isn’t rostered on some team yet. Don’t recall seeing him in the portal.

It will be interesting to see if Hillegas has added enough size to be competitive at 157 and if Shawn Taylor is cutting too much weight to be competitive at that weight as well. You also have Michael Dolan in there as well, he has never consistently cracked the starting line-up but has always been competitive. I am most excited to see how all the new guys are going to shake out at 133 and the 3-man round robin at 184 between Dennis Robin, Ian Bush, and Hoke Hogan.

184 will be interesting. Also how well Hillegas can move after going up 2 weight classes. Tough part about wrestling off is you know each other’s moves from practices. Wrestler A might be able to beat wrestler B, but wrestler B fares better against other schools. Only the coaches get to see what really happens on the daily.

Interesting. Can he make 157 and be affective….whewww. I hadn’t thought about that. Love the idea tho. Kinda surprised Watters didn’t move up. He most definitely could but I’m sure he must see himself as more of a contender at 149.

184 is exciting to me because it looks like you have at least three guys who could realistically start. Robin, Bush and Hogan. I’ll be surprised tho if Hogans ready. If this was freestyle I’d say definitely.

Rune is 100% going unless Flynn wants to RS him. No need to hold him back. He’s ready. Only concern for me, like Hogan as well, is the weight.

Hope we’re still looking everywhere for transfers tho. They could come in and wrestler the second semester. 133 obviously but we need an upperclassman HW for next year. Unless Rune moves up or Kehler is ready to go as a true freshman.

I did not think Hogan’s matches were going to be so lopsided

I don't want to beat around the Bush, but it looks like you were pretty well spot on except for 184.

I see what you did there, pretty clever. I will be honest, when I made that post I totally forgot Ian Bush. My apologies to him.
